What’s a Propagation Box, Anyway?
Think of it as a cozy little humidity dome for your precious plant babies. It’s basically a mini environment that keeps moisture in, so your cuttings or seeds don’t dry out while they’re busy growing roots or sprouting. It’s like a spa day, but for plants!
And guess what? You don’t need fancy equipment or a degree in botany. Just some simple supplies, and you’ll be well on your way!

DIY Propagation Box: Your Supply List
Here’s what you’ll need to build your own fantastic propagation box:
- Clear plastic storage tub with a lid: I found mine at the local mega-mart.
- Small pots: For your seeds or cuttings to live in while they get established.
- Potting soil: The good stuff!
- Perlite or sharp sand: To help drainage!
- Water: Because plants get thirsty.
- Seeds or cuttings: The stars of the show!
Building Your Box: Step-by-Step
Let’s get started on this fun and simple project!
1. Choose Your Container:
Grab a medium to large-sized clear plastic storage box. The height should be tall enough that it won’t smush new growth.
2. Shine it Up!
Give your plastic tub a good wash with soap and water. Rinse well and let it air dry. Sparkling clean is the way to go!
3. Planting Time!
Here are two methods of planting in your new propagation box:
Option 1: Individual Pots
- Mix your potting soil with perlite or horticultural sand. This helps keep the soil light and airy!
- Fill your 4-inch pots with the mix.
- If you’re using cuttings, take your cutting! There are lots of resources available online.
- For seed-starting, sow your seeds as directed on the packet.
How easy is that!
Option 2: Straight to Soil
- Add about 4 inches of your soil/perlite mixture directly to the tub.
- Moisten it without making it too soggy.
- Dip your cuttings in rooting hormone and place directly into the soil mix.
4. Add Water
Add water to the pots as needed! Easy does it, don’t wanna drown the babes…
5. Cover it Up:
Pop the lid on top to seal in the moisture.
Finding the Perfect Spot
Where to put your propagation box? Here’s the inside scoop:
- Winter Sowing: Set it outside where it won’t tip over, and where you can easily peek in on it.
- Early Spring Starts: Place it where it can soak up the daytime heat.
- Indoor Propagation: A transparent lid is best!
Extra Tips & Tricks
- Bottom Heat: Adding bottom heat to your propagation box creates the ideal environment! Use a heat mat if needed!
